Summer 2009 Classes & Camps

This summer the Museum is offering animation, cartooning, and manga as well as hands-on art instructon for children. Participants will work with professional cartoonists to unleash their inner artist. Class options include week-long classes, half-day classes, and a 6-week series. All classes require pre-registration and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Snacks and supplies are provided.

Students learned the basics of cartooning,
stop-motion, and other animation techniques
with professional cartoonist Brian Kolm as part of our
2009 summer class session, "Taste of 'Tooning"!


Pre-K Classes | Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 9am–12:30pm
For children ages 3–5—MUST BE TOILET TRAINED
These early art experiences are designed to excite your pre-schoolers’ senses and imaginations through hands-on art projects and movement games. Drop off your child or stay with us and enjoy the fun!

COST: Weekly Rate ● $75 for members; $95 for non-members

JUNE 8, 10 & 12 Infinity and Beyond
Learn about space and space exploration by making an edible model of the moon, creating craters, eating astronaut food, and more! Instructor: Kara Chiono.
JUNE 29, JULY 1 & 3 Take Flight
Create and fly kites, rockets, and airplanes. Learn about birds and meet some real birds too! Instructor: Terry Katzman.
JULY 6, 8 & 10Art Adventures
Explore the art of the Schulz Museum and experiment with painting, pastels, and a variety of other fun and messy media. Create a variety of fun projects to take home.

AUGUST 3, 5 & 7 Color Creations
Get messy and have fun with color. Use Play-Doh, paint, Kool-Aid, and more to make models, t-shirts, pictures, and other colorful projects. Instructor: Kara Chiono.
AUGUST 10, 12 & 14 Creature Features
From worms to warthogs, learn about and learn to draw a variety of different animals. Build a beaver dam and a bird nest, make clay creatures, and more.

Classes for Children Entering Grade 1 and Above
Spend some time at the Schulz Museum enjoying hands-on activities and time in the Museum. All classes include projects to take home, daily snacks, breaks, and professional art instruction. All materials and snacks are provided. Enjoy a variety of week-long classes, or come each Monday for the Monday Masterpieces series.

MONDAY–FRIDAY ● JUNE 1–5 ● 9am–12:30pmSpace Camp
Explore the Museum's exhibit To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA and learn about space and space exploration. Build and launch a variety of rockets, create an edible model of the solar system, make a moon mobile, and complete many more hands-on science and art projects. Instructor: Terry Katzman.
MONDAY–FRIDAY ● JUNE 8–12 ● 9am–12:30pm
Cartoon Safari

Take a summer adventure in cartooning. Learn to draw all kinds of different animals, including some from your own imagination. By the end of the week students will create their own cartoon magazine to take home. Instructor Brian Narelle has animated for Pixar, Disney, and Sesame Street.

Explore the art of the Schulz Museum by experimenting with everything from creating and flying kites to paints, pastels, and photography. Artists of all levels will have fun learning new skills and creating a variety of projects to take home.

Space Camp
Learn about space and space exploration by building and launching a variety of rockets, creating an edible model of the solar system, making a moon mobile, and completing many more hands-on science and art projects. Instructor: Terry Katzman.

Keep cool this summer with winter fun! Create ice sculptures and make your own ice cream. Play in the snow and learn to ice skate at Snoopy’s Home Ice among other fun and cool activities. Instructor: Kara Chiono.
MONDAY–FRIDAY ● AUGUST 3–7 ● 9am–12:30pm Character Creation and Cartooning for Kids
Have a fun-filled week designing and drawing your own characters and backgrounds, making comics and telling stories. Join local character designer and animator Fabian Molina to learn the basics of cartooning.
MONDAYS ● JUNE 22–JULY 27 ● 1–4pm
Monday Masterpieces: Art and Cartooning for Kids
Spend one or more Monday afternoon learning to draw and develop stories and characters. All classes, except where noted, are taught by Sean Simons. Sean received his BFA degree in Animation and Visual Effects and has experience designing environments for video games. He has worked for Snoopy's Home Ice since August 2006.

FUN-damentals of Art
If you like drawing and art, this class is for you. Explore how color works by using a variety of paints and other media to complete art projects inside and outside the classroom. Instructor: Tony Guaraldi-Brown.
MONDAY–FRIDAY ● JULY 6–10 ● 9am–12:30pm
Taste of 'Tooning
Students will get their feet wet learning everything from the basics of cartooning to putting their comics into motion with stop-motion and other animation techniques. Join Brian Kolm, professional cartoonist and creator of Beyond the Great Chimney, for a week of hands-on cartooning.

MONDAY–FRIDAY ● JULY 13–17 ● 9am–12:30pm Manga and Anime Drawing
Learn how to draw comic-book characters and create comic-book stories in the popular Japanese manga style. Instructor Emily Martin teaches manga throughout Sonoma County.

MONDAY–FRIDAY ● JULY 27–31 ● 9am–12:30pm Computer Animation:
Make it Move

Learn the basics of animation including hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, and an introduction to computer animation. Kids will work together to create short computer animated films. Instructor: Sean Simons.

MONDAY–FRIDAY ● AUGUST 10–14 ● 9am–12:30pm
LEGO Animation: Session 1
Use computers and LEGOs to create your own short films, build sets and characters with LEGOs, and add lights, cameras, computers, and action to create and edit a movie. Instructor Torrance Carroll's Lego-Animation movies have won awards for best animation and best technical achievement at several local film festivals.

MONDAY–FRIDAY ● AUGUST 10–14 ● 1:30–5pm
LEGO Animation: Session 2
Use computers and LEGOs to create your own short films, build sets and characters with LEGOs, and add lights, cameras, computers, and action to create and edit a movie. Instructor Sean Simons received his BFA in Animation and Visual Effects and has been working for the Schulz Complex for almost three years.

Extend Your Day!
Bring a lunch and stay with us until 4 p.m. any day. Extended day activities include ice skating every Wednesday (except July 15), movies, games, arts, crafts, outdoor adventures, cartooning, and more.
COST PER DAY: $15 for members; $20 for non-members

Fee Assistance
The Schulz Museum is committed to making classes available to everyone. To request a Fee Assistance Application, please call (707) 579-4452, ext. 263 or download a
PDF version of the form.

Cancellation & Refund Policy
If you need to cancel a class, please let us know as soon as possible. If you cancel a class with more than a 24–hour notice, the Museum will provide you with either a full credit for a future class or with a refund minus a $15 processing fee. We cannot provide any refunds or credits for classes cancelled with less than a 24–hour notice.
Please note that the Schulz Museum’s classes
are educational programs and NOT child care
as defined by the State of California.
