
Calendar of Events
In addition to our exhibitions, the Schulz Museum provides a wide variety of programs and presentations throughout the year, giving our visitors opportunities to: meet professional cartoonists; view some of Schulz's favorite movies in our 100-seat theatre; make hands-on crafts and learn about different cartooning techniques; and attend Members-Only parties. Our Special Group Programs provide visitors with even more hands-on opportunities, including Home School Days, Girl Scout Days, and special guest presentations and lectures.
And new to the Schulz Museum in Fall 2009, we are offering a Master Class Series for Adults who want to learn cartooning techniques from some of the best in the field!
Each visit to the Schulz Museum is a unique experience!

Second Saturday Cartoonist
Every second Saturday the Schulz Museum hosts a new Cartoonist-in-Residence! This month meet, watch, and talk to cartoonist Amy Martin. Martin has self-published eleven comic books since 2004 including the semi-autobiographical Nanny Girl.

SATURDAYS, FEBRUARY 27 TO MARCH 27 ● 10am–1:30pm
Advanced LEGO–Animation Workshop for Kids
Spend five Saturdays learning to edit and add sound, dialog, and back drops to make a professional-looking short movie with LEGOs. Recommended for children in grades 4 and above.

Home School Day: Take a Hike
Enjoy a morning of Beagle Scouting with a variety of hands-on nature and science activities, including making a compass and map and experiencing some basic orienteering.
Cost: $5 per child. For an additional $5 per person, add ice skating to your day from 12–2pm at Snoopy’s Home Ice.

The Cartoon Introduction to Economics
Meet stand-up economist Yoram Bauman. With a PhD in economics, Bauman makes the economy understandable and even funny for everyone. Since 2006 Bauman has been the environmental economist for the University of Washington in Seattle. He also teaches part-time at an area high school and a graduate institute, as well as private consulting on the economics of climate change. Bauman will speak and then sign his new book, The Cartoon Introduction to Economics: Volume 1. |

The Felix String Quartet performs the String Quartet No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak. The Felix String Quartet is comprised of Sonoma County locals Diane Peterson (reporter for the Press Democrat), John Thompson (website developer), Steve Osborn (medical writer), and Michael Fecskes (music student at Sonoma State University). |

Cartooning is Serious Business
Harvey and Glyph Award-winning cartoonist Keith Knight explores the business side of indie cartooning, including self-publishing, syndication vs. self-syndication, being a web cartoonist, and more. Knight’s comics, which include the Knight Life, K Chronicles, and (Th)ink, are read world-wide and have been collected in eight books.

From the richly detailed flora and fauna of Pogo’s Okefenokee
Swamp to the minimalist surroundings of Peanuts, cartoonists
have created unique environments in which
their characters live, work, and play. Among
the most memorable comic strip locales are Li’l Abner’s Dogpatch, Krazy Kat’s Coconino
County, and Beetle Bailey’s Camp Swampy.
This is the final exhibition in the Language
of Lines trilogy, co-curated by cartoon
historian Brian Walker.

From Shakespeare to Schulz
Learn about the lives and works of two great artists, and see up-close how one inspired the other. Hear from Shakespeare scholar Michael Jensen about Shakespeare’s life and influence on popular culture. Charles Schulz’s son, Monte Schulz, will speak about his father’s love of literature and his own work, including his latest novel, This Side of Jordan. Also go behind the scenes of the Schulz Museum’s collections and Research Center to see several original Peanuts strips inspired by Shakespeare.

NEW EXHIBIT | Youth Culture
Explore how Peanuts reflected five decades of contemporary youth culture, from coon skin caps and 3–D glasses to cool jazz, surfing, and even Harry Potter books. Schulz also kept up with “happening” celebrity personalities and found a way to include everyone from Dr. Spock to Michael Jackson in his strip. Relive the decades of Peanuts in this exhibition of 70 original strips.

Sports were important to Charles Schulz, and golf was one of his favorite games. This exhibition features photographs and memorabilia of Schulz’s game and also looks at how he portrayed golf in Peanuts, as Snoopy assumed the role of “World Famous Golf Pro.”

Guest Author
Nancy Goldstein will talk about her biography of Jackie Ormes, the first African-American cartoonist, and will sign copies of her book following her presentation. In the United States at midcentury—a time of few opportunities for women in general and even fewer for African American women—Jackie Ormes (1911-85) blazed a trail as a popular cartoonist with the major black newspapers of the day. Nancy Goldstein's biography chronicles the life of this multiply talented, fascinating woman.

How many suns? Is the Earth flat? Charles Schulz touched on many aspects of
the natural world during the nearly fifty years he created Peanuts. Some of the characters’ cockamamie understandings of the world around them afforded Schulz many opportunities to introduce his readers to fun facts about the natural world. Explore the natural world in Peanuts strips, posters, and activity centers.
