The Language of Lines: How Cartoonists Create Characters
July 25 through November 30, 2009 This exhibition, co-curated by cartoon historian Brian Walker, was the second in a trilogy exploring the foundations of cartooning. How Cartoonists Create Characters explores iconic characters, cartoon heroes and villains, and dynamic duos. A section featuring Peanuts strips displayed how four major characters—Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, and Snoopy—developed over the 50-year history of the strip. The exhibition contained over 65 original comic strips and included a children’s discovery area where children could exercise their imaginations to create their own characters or alter egos.
Co-curated by Brian Walker, co-curator of the
critically-acclaimed exhibition, Masters of American Comics.
