The Schulz Museum was proud to present Tribute to Sparky: Cartoon Artists Honor Charles M. Schulz as our innagural exhibition. It was so extensive that we had to break it up into three installations, each consististing of approximately fifty individual works covering four basic categories—the revelation of Schulz's illness in the fall of 1999; the formal announcement of his retirement in December 1999; the reaction to his death in February 2000; and the pre-arranged May 27, 2000, newspaper cartoon tribute.

The May 2000 tribute was originally organized by Patrick McDonnell, cartoonist of Mutts, and Mike Luckovich, editorial cartoonist for the Atlanta Constitution to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Peanuts. McDonnell, Luckovich, and their fellow cartoonists arranged with newspapers nationwide to honor Sparky on May 27, 2000. They chose this date for their surprise cartoon tribute to coincide with Sparky's acceptance of the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Cartoonists Society's annual Reuben Awards ceremony.

As the events of Sparky's illness and death unfolded, cartoonists reacted spontaneously and generously. With words and images, Sparky's peers were inspired to pay tribute to his influence on the art of cartooning and on him personally.

The public got its first glance at these tribute pieces at the Schulz Museum's Grand Opening on August 17, 2002.
