Interactive Zoetropes at the Schulz Museum
The Charles M. Schulz Museum is pleased to provide a special learning opportunity to the Education Room. In addition to freehand drawing, completing cartooning worksheets, and the other activities available there, visitors can also create their own moving picture with our zoetropes.
WHAT IS IT?
A zoetrope is a revolving drum with slits cut into the top. Sequential pictures or images are placed inside in the drum but underneath the slits. When the drum rotates, one can look through the slits and the pictures / images come to life.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We see the animation in the zoetrope due to a principle known as "persistence of vision" (also sometimes called "persistence of motion"). It happens because our eyes and brain retain a visual impression for about 1/30th of a second. The image that remains blends with the next image to create the illusion of motion.
